Beale Spotlight: Hub Zemke Library
The Hub Zemke Library so much more than bound books and the Dewey Decimal System. Registering for a library card allows active duty, retired, civilian, and family members access to a wide range of products and services. The Beale AFB library has thousands of books (new selections arrive each month) with separate sections for large print, biographies, healthcare, home-schooling, inspirational and others. Reference collections for all ages and books on military family life are available. They have a large collection of over 1000 audio books and music CDs, more than 3600 videos/DVDs in addition to a growing collection of magazines. The library hosts a paperback exchange book program, bring a book, take a book. Twice a month you and your preschool and early elementary children can visit for free Story Time with Crafts. Volunteers read to your small children and then create a special craft. During the summer, preschool through high school seniors can participate in the Summer Reading Program. Parents monitor the number of books read by their children and prizes are given by the library at the end of the program.
For the active duty member the library provides mission support through education. CSAF's to enrich professional knowledge, Country Watch providing country specific geopolitical intelligence, (ONLY AVAILABLE AT YOUR BASE LIBRARY), various military specific research links, Jane's Information On-line: a defense information source, electronic military journals, newspaper articles with coverage of local and regional news, several titles of military periodicals including back issues. The library also supports the Beale Education Center through the CLEP/DSST Center with the following resources: Online practice tests, access to the CLEP Success study guide, printable practice tests with answers and access to the official test preparation guide, DSST.
Beale's library is equipped with a public computer lab that offers access to numerous online resources, email, scanners, printers, CD burner and in the children's lab there are parent's computers so the whole family can "surf" together. Available online selections include, restricted access to information about both the Air Force and private sector, thousands of eBooks that can be viewed online on any PC connected to the Internet, as a member of Air Combat Command (ACC) a librarian is available 24/7 with a virtual reference service, over 25,000 college, graduate and professional school profiles, hundreds of audio book downloads, complete automotive repair manuals, over 500 newspapers from 70 countries in 37 languages. Some of these products and services require registration at the library and dedicated usernames and passwords. Several sites are available from the AF Portal and home computers.
Other services available at the Hub Zemeke Memorial Library are; Inter-Library Loan Service providing access to the collections of many other libraries, a coin-operated, self-service copy and fax machine (send and receive faxes) and wireless internet connection.
