Blues and Bikes in the Foothills Aug 9th
Join the Loma Rica Foothill Lions sponsored poker run to raise money for tornado victims in Greensburg KS who were wiped out by an EF5 tornado.
Yet another year has passed and several towns/states have again endured natural disasters, and here I go again.....This year's benefit proceeds will be donated (100%) to the Lions Club in Greensburg, Kansas to assist the townspeople in rebuilding their lives. A massive tornado struck Kansas in May of 2007. It was a weekend of violent storms that killed at least 12 people statewide. Little remains standing in Greensburg, a town of 1,700 residents. The tornado demolished every business on the main street, City Hall and the high school. Churches lost their steeples, trees were stripped of their branches and neighborhoods were flattened.
Officials estimate as much as 95 percent of the town was destroyed and most of the city's residents had to be evacuated to shelters in schools and other facilities in nearby towns. As of February 2008 the town continues to have a MASH unit for a hospital (with evening/morning temperatures in the low single digits), is beginning to rebuild homes, just opened a small restaurant, and still utilizes a trailer for a grocery store.
This year promises to be an exciting day in the foothills supporting those in need! Musicians from multiple states are coming to support our 2008 cause, and to give Northern California a sweet taste of the blues. Please consider coming out on August 9th to this fantastic event and enjoy the day with the Foothill Lions. Your donation will make it possible for us to make a difference to the people who truly need a helping hand.
Signed,
Debbie Burlingame, Foothill Blues Coordinator

Featured Destination: San Francisco
One of the most visited cities in the world, San Francisco, boasts some very popular tourist destinations. Fisherman's Warf, Lombard Street, Chinatown, the Golden Gate Bridge, all classic San Francisco experiences not to be missed but don't leave this distinctive city without seeing some of it's more unique offerings.
The Golden Gate bridge, an architectural marvel, is definitely a must see but you must see it from underneath! There are several vantage points to view this massive structure from below. From Marin county traveling south on Highway 101 exit at Conzelman Road and veer left to the parking lot. There is a walkway that takes you beneath the bridge and through the steel supports of the span. On the other side you will find tourists enjoying Vista Point possibly unaware of the special access. On the San Francisco side of the bridge is Fort Point National Historic Site. Here you will stand in the shadow of the south anchorage and have the opportunity to explore the fort to find additional views. To get to Fort Point from San Francisco, take Highway 101 north and exit right at the Golden Gate Bridge toll plaza before getting on the bridge. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp and then left onto Lincoln Boulevard. Take the first left onto Long Avenue and follow onto Marine Drive, Fort Point at its end.
Another jewel of San Francisco is The Presidio, a retired military post now managed by the National Park Service and the Presidio Trust. The over 1400 acres are comprised of beaches, forests, coastal bluffs, rare natural habitats, gardens, historic buildings, period architecture and offer magnificent views of the city, Pacific Ocean and Golden Gate Bridge. www.presidio.gov for maps and directions.
At the east end of Yacht Road is a peculiar environmental sculpture with a subtle audible surprise. Take a short walk to the end of the thin strand of land that juts out into the bay and you will find the Wave Organ. Built out of stones from a gold rush era cemetery the organ performs a symphony as the Pacific Ocean ebbs and flows. Beautiful views are plentiful with the city skyline, Alcatraz and Golden Gate all within site. Place your ear close to the exposed ends of the submerged pipes or take a turn in the "stereo booth" and enjoy a concert by Mother Nature.
In downtown San Francisco, in a small park near the Embarcadero on Clay and Davis Streets, is one of the roosting areas for a flock of wild Cherry-headed Conure Parrots. They travel the waterfront between the Embarcadero, Walton Square and Telegraph Hill. Originating from South America the original members of the group were most likely birds that escaped captivity or were released by irresponsible owners. Despite the drastic change in habitat they have adapted to their urban surroundings and the flock is now comprised of "native" born members. To see these colorful birds flying free in San Francisco is a special experience. Feeding the parrots or any wild animal is against the law but respectively watching these lovely creatures is another of the unique gifts this amazing city has to offer.
Featured Business: Chipolte
We hope you didn't miss it. On July 21st, Chipotle Restaurant in Yuba City held a free meal event for active duty members and DOD civilians. Between the hours of 11am and 8pm if you presented your ID you received a FREE burrito, bowl, tacos or salad. Hundreds of Beale members showed up to enjoy a fresh mex meal.
"Food With Integrity" is the philosophy of this unique business. They pride themselves on using only naturally raised chicken and pork. Thirty percent of their beans are grown organically, the sour cream served comes from cows that have not been given synthetic growth hormone, forty percent of the beef comes from suppliers that meet their strict criteria. They hope to make it 100% in the near future. They also offer a number of vegetarian and vegan dining choices. Chipotle does not use any artificial colors or artificial flavorings, it is all natural goodness.
Chipotle serves generous portions at fair prices, the ambiance is inviting, the art is unique, the people are friendly but it is the food that keeps you coming back. You choose the ingredients from the spread of fresh fixin's and they create your perfect meal right before your eyes. If you didn't make it to the free meal event visit Chipotle in Yuba City anyway. It is worth the price!
