Featured Destination: The Nut Tree in Vacaville
In 1855 Josiah Allison brought his family from Iowa to the fertile Vaca Valley, California. When gold prospecting didn't pay off he settled down to farm. He planted fruit trees and one lone black walnut tree beside Emigrant Wagon Road, now Interstate 80 in Vacaville. In 1921 his granddaughter Helen Harbison set up a fruit stand under the enormous walnut tree,The Nut Tree. The legendary California roadside attraction grew from there. In 1996 the Nut Tree closed but reopened in 2006 and is once again a unique destination for everyone traveling through Vacaville on Interstate 80.
Now a family fun center, the Nut Tree has something to offer visitors of all ages. Nut Tree Village is a shopping complex with numerous shops, national chains and restaurants. The special attraction is the Nut Tree Family Theme Park. Take a ride on the historic Nut Tree Railroad, the open air train takes visitors on a scenic ride through the entire park. Activities include the simple pleasures of rocking on one of the wooden hobby horses, feeding the Koi fish, building a stuffed bear, spinning round and round on the carousel or posing for photos on the silly face wall. The more adventurous guests can take a turn on the fun coaster, speed around with other visitors in the bumper cars or soar above the action below on the balloon ride and enjoy views of the Vacaville area from new heights.
