Featured Destination: Safetyville USA
Since children are small scale it makes sense that Safetyville USA, dedicated to teaching children safety skills, is small scale. The tiny town is complete with a fire house, police station, miniature State Capitol, familiar businesses, crosswalks, sidewalks, electrical area, construction zone, working traffic lights and railroad crossing all at 1/3 the size of their giant counterparts.
The facility offers several tours focusing on different safety issues. Children will learn about fire safety, stranger danger, how to use 911, animal safety, traffic safety, dangerous areas such as construction zones and much more. Tours guided by volunteers are available for groups from 10 to 60. These tours last about 1 hour and cost $2.00 per person. Self guided tours are available for groups of less than 10 children, call 1-800-825-7262 for more information. Safetyville is also available for very unique birthday parties or other events.
The grounds include a picnic area and 3 1/2 acres of open space. Special events are held throughout the year. 2009 is the 75th anniversary of Safety Center Inc and the 25th birthday of Safetyville USA. To celebrate they are hosting a Family Safety and Health Expo on Saturday, June 13th from 10am to 4pm. There will be informational booths and interactive displays on health, safety and youth recreation activities, raffles, safety and health giveaways, food booths as well as the opportunity to meet real local law enforcement and fire department personnel. Admission is free and the experience is worth the drive to Safetyville USA, 3909 Bradshaw Road, one mile south of HWY 50 in Sacramento.
